The proposal for the redevelopment of the Sussex House site incorporated 43,055sq.ft of food retail situated above ground and basement level parking for 350 cars, a 90 bedroom hotel with an associated 5,000sq.ft A3 unit, and 25 residential units. The proposal was part of the wider Town Centre North Master Plan for Crawley. The scheme proposal sits on an island site where the new town’s Boulevard meets the Old Town’s historic High Street. UNIT’s response was to express the uses in a single undulating form, wrapped in a tiled skin inspired by the vernacular of the adjacent listed buildings. The building’s pattern and scale morph in response to the changing context.
